Ryan London has been working on a new tool for Windows that will allow secretaries in schools to look up DWL accounts and change passwords for staff and students within their school. It is currently in a small test stage.
The lookup will be handy when new staff and students come with a complaint that they cannot access their account. Secretaries will be able to do a lookup to see if 1. an account exists, and 2. what is the username as when we have common names we have to alter usernames.
The new staff account process will continue as usual where a work order comes to site secretaries and AOs with a temporary password and account for new staff. The lookup makes it easier for schools to troubleshoot before having to put in a Work Order.
The password change function would be available only for a secretary to change a staff password in their school that is not listed in an Office group in our directory (other secretaries, principals, counsellors). For those restricted folks, a Work Order would be required from the site secretary or AO for a password change. The policy would still apply for password changes in that situation http://www.prn.bc.ca/ts/?p=1734. We will update it as required for other situations in the future with these new tools.
It is important to note that each use of the lookup tool and the password change tool are logged and reported to Technology Services. Misuse of these tools may result in sanction.
TL;DR – cool new account tools, with great power comes great responsibility.
