Community Embedded Learning

Sharon McKenzie presented on Oct 17, 2008 to a varied group at the DDC about Community Embedded Praxis. (CEP [TM])

It’s not just structuralism, it’s not just constructivism, it is post-modernism.

It’s not just linear, it is not just situational contextual, it is inter-textual.

It’s not just learning, it is not just project based learning, it is critically reflective action. (one step beyond pbl)

CEP is post-modernism, inter-textual, and critically reflective action.

We need to include the children in the learning rather than pouring knowledge into their brain.

Example of Kidston Elementary School integrating with Coldstream seniors home. The idea was to move from a compartmentalized community where everyone is separate to small “c” community where we integrate different generations into school. School doesn’t need to be in a traditional bricks and mortar school building.

Curriculum is not the master, it is something we use to guide our practice.

Information and Knowledge are not the same. Knowledge is information that is applied in context.

CEP is not advocating changing a school, it is advocating to rebuild it, rebuild how what education is.

Social responsibility is responsibility of the group, personal responsibility is just that. We should beteaching both and more emphasis on personal responsibility.
